A Heart on the Floor...

My new single, "Breaking Down," is now available everywhere music is. And with that exciting release, I would like to introduce you to a great friend of mine, Richard Charter.

Richard is an incredible artist based in Calgary, AB (though he's moving right away to Vancouver Island). At the beginning of March, I put on a contest for anyone creative to create a piece of artwork that best reflected the story of my new song. Each participant would get an exclusive first listen of my song, and then submit their entry(ies) for a chance at a prize and being the artwork for my song. Richard took the challenge and really ran with it. I would like to share with you his explanation of why he did what he did to create this beautiful piece of art. From his words...

"My vision is to make a script detailing the background for the story your song is telling - unrequited love, relationship lost, disparity, yet hope. From my experience, what our generation does nowadays to tell write biography (i.e. script) is make a 'wall of stuff.' I feel like everyone has one these days, and you can guarantee that every item added, no matter how special or insignificant, reflects a huge moment in their life. So, I'd like to describe each item on the wall I made, using images I drew or crafted myself.

Moving left to right: The page of writing is the lyrics, written on a typewriter using old dot-matrix paper, to invoke some sense of nostalgia. Beside that is a butterfly case, which in my mind always represents something beautiful, though also is a sort of deliberate destruction - a beauty which should be free. The angel and cross beneath it introduces a sense that the lyrics are somewhat delivered like a prayer, of submission or intersession. The following frame is an excerpt from Homer's Odyssey, which speaks of journey and departure, though also a longing to return home to loved ones. The rose and the eye are deliberate romantic symbols, evocative of the heart or soul. The photographs are taken with an old analog camera, again reiterating the nostalgia and sense of time passage in the lyrics. Finally, the drawing of the hands is meant to signify a sense of ambiguity, yet optimism. The hands are frozen in space, though they are neither diverging, nor converging - it is left to the listener to intuit the outcome."

What a beautiful piece of art and creativity... With that, I leave you to delve into the song and into your own story. I hope that you can find the hope in the midst of pain, sorrow, and heartbreak in your life; that you know that you are not alone; that you know that the person who dropped your heart is not the only one that holds it. You have a Father who wants to carry your burdens for you, to take that pain and replace it with unending joy and fill you with love like a waterfall would fill a cup.

Thank you for your interest in me and my story. I love you all.

Much love,

-Cody David
